Suspension clamps are used to hang conductors or ground wires and work with the insulator of link fitting to tower arms or substation structures. Made from malleable iron or aluminum alloy, the suspension angle is a minimum of 25 degrees, and the radius of the curve is at least eight times the diameter of the installed leads. The grip on various leads meets international standards.

What is a Suspension Clamp?

A suspension clamp is a type of fixed hardware used in electrical and telecommunication lines. There are two main types: tension fittings and limited grip hardware. Suspension clamps hang or support conductors and can bear vertical loads.

Functions of Suspension Clamps

Suspension clamps are used for overhead lines or substations. They hang conductors and arresters on insulators and towers. They also fix and support conductors and non-linear rods on poles.

Types of Suspension Clamps

There are numerous types of suspension clamps, classified by different methods. Below we introduce three common classification methods.

Classified by Structure

CGU Suspension Clamp

Also known as a general type, a CGU suspension clamp can be customized to specification and meets international standards.

Materials:
Clamp, plate: forging iron
Closed pin: stainless steel
Other parts: steel

Suspension Clamp with U-Shaped Plate

Main usage and feature
The diameter of the wire clip slot is large for large section steel-cored aluminum conductors or wrapped conductors. Using a common hanging plate may cause deformation; thus, a U-shaped hanging plate reduces bending and changes direction.

Suspension Clamp with Socket Clevis Eye

Components and materials:
Socket: forging iron.
End fittings: stainless steel.
Other materials: steel.
All components are hot-dip galvanized and corrosion-resistant.

Strengthened Suspension Clamp — CGJ Type

Main features:
High vertical load capacity;
Cables do not escape the clamp even under unbalanced icing conditions;
For lightning conductors, grip strength should be at least 25% of the steel strand’s rated tensile strength. For steel core aluminum stranded wire, it should be no less than 30%.

Anti-corona Suspension Clamp — CFG Type

For 330kV to 500kV transmission lines or high-altitude transmission lines. This type has high anti-corona ability and consists of a flared hull, bolts, and a steel hoop in the middle known as a suspension bar type.
Materials: aluminum alloy clamp and plate; stainless steel dead-end link; steel spare parts. This type divides into two sub-types: line and jumper, with the jumper also usable in substations.

Classified by Position of Rotating Point

Center Swing Suspension Clamp

Main features:
The axis of the hull is above the centerline of the wire. The rotation coincides with the deflection of the wire.

Carried-up Suspension Clamp — CGF Type

Characteristics:
The hull axis lies below the centerline of the wire. This makes it less stable and its rotation often exceeds the wire’s deflection.
Function:
Used for overhead ground wires on top of towers or when split wires are arranged on the bar.

Hang-down Suspension Clamp — CGF Type

Material:
Clamp and plate: ZL102 aluminum alloy; stainless steel dead-end link; spare parts: steel.

Classified by Raw Materials

Aluminum Alloy Suspension Clamp

Features:

High strength,

Strong corrosion resistance,

Low hysteresis loss,

Low energy consumption and

Energy saving.

It also helps control the generation of corona, making it suitable for 330kV to 500kV transmission lines. This clamp needs to meet high altitude corona production standards.

It is also used for 220kV lines as a replacement for malleable cast iron lines, providing economic benefits.

Steel Plate Punching Suspension Clamp

The hull is stamped from steel plate without a hanging plate. The hanging point is above the axis of the wire. The U-bolt is installed upwards for convenient construction. The production process is simple with high yield, light weight, and few accessories. Suitable for steel-cored aluminum stranded wires and medium to small sections of aluminum stranded wire.

Malleable Cast Iron

The hull, plate, and clevis are made of cast iron. The closed pin and other spare parts are made of steel and hot-dip galvanized.

What is Hysteresis Loss?

Due to the magnetic material in the AC iron core coil, hysteresis and eddy currents can create power loss and heat generation. The coil resistance also contributes to power loss. The suspension clamp’s curvature radius should be at least eight times the diameter of the installed wire.
