Air compressor recommendations for home shop

I just went through this last year and here's what I discovered. Most compressors from big box stores are of low quality. For a compressor that lasts, consider these tips:

  • Consider purchasing an older used compressor and rebuilding it, as their quality was significantly better even 20 years ago.
  • Opt for a compressor with a 7.5HP motor. These tend to run at a slightly higher RPM yet are not excessively noisy.
  • If possible, get one with an 80-gallon tank, and also consider an extra storage tank if space permits.
  • Frequent starts wear out components in single-phase compressors, putting undue stress on the start winding and contacts.
  • Starting at a higher kick-in pressure increases this stress. My settings are at 70 psi kick-in and 145 psi kick-out.
  • Lower your kick-out pressure, as most standard tools do not require 175 psi—this only wastes pressure and adds unnecessary strain on your equipment.

Currently, my system consists of a Husky 7.5HP 80-gallon compressor (from Home Depot) purchased in the early 2000s. These were essentially repainted Speedaire commercial entry units. I rebuilt both the electric motor and the compressor, while the tank was in excellent condition. The previous owner had set it at 175 psi kick-out, which burned the contacts. He disassembled the compressor and left it as-is. I acquired a 120-gallon air tank as new old stock at a scrap price, bringing my total setup to a 200-gallon system. With lower kick-in and kick-out pressures, the compressor runs for extended periods, which helps to heat up the oil and drive out any condensed water.

This entire setup cost me about $400-$450, including replacement parts and paint. With regular maintenance, my son will likely be the one needing to rebuild it in the future.

Minimizing noise is a universal concern. My father lost much of his hearing due to years in a noisy factory. In scenarios where noise is a significant issue, such as in an apartment, an enclosure is the only effective and practical solution. Building an enclosure using an aluminum T-slot frame with plexiglass panels and pyramid-style soundproofing foam can be inexpensive and straightforward. The main issue is spindle cutting noise, regardless of chip clearing methods. Back when I lived in a Manhattan apartment, my neighbors would complain about hearing me walk on the floor.
