To capture detailed images using an ultrasound system, high-frequency sound waves ranging between 3 and 20 MHz are essential. At these frequencies, ultrasound waves do not transmit effectively through the air. Therefore, a medium that can displace the air between the transducer and the patient’s skin is necessary. Consequently, ultrasound systems cannot be used to study organs filled with air.
Utilizing ultrasound gel helps in the efficient transmission of sound waves without altering them. While pure water could serve the same purpose, gel is preferred due to its convenience as it doesn’t leak, keeps the patient dry, acts as a lubricant, and fills the gaps between the transducer and the skin. Disinfectants like povidone-iodine may be used as an alternative during certain procedures.
Commonly used ultrasound gel, for example in prenatal ultrasounds, consists of purified water, a gelling agent, and preservatives (antibacterial). Typically, it’s neither greasy nor colored, ensuring no stains on a patient’s clothing. Pre-heating the gel is not advisable as it can diminish its cohesiveness and foster bacterial growth.
