Foam Backed Vinyl or Not: What is the Deal?

I'm currently renovating the interior of my Scarab and I've noticed that all the vinyl components, including the seats, bench, sides, and sundeck, are foam-backed. I get why you'd use foam backing for side pieces without any foam for added padding between the board and vinyl.

However, what puzzles me is that my bench—which I've taken apart—has a 4-5 inch foam along with foam-backed vinyl. The sundeck also seems to have this setup as observed through a tear.

I have two options for replacement: a 3/16 inch foam-backed vinyl or a thinner backing material that isn't foam. I guess I'm seeking to understand the purpose behind the foam backing.

Vinyl Siding—Foam Backed or Not? Opinions?

Among the four quotes for new siding, two include foam-backed insulation built into the siding, while the other two suggest laying insulation first and then placing the siding over it.

Foam-backed siding seems more robust and less likely to warp. However, I've heard it doesn't significantly impact energy savings. Any opinions on this?
