How to choose car springs

Feb. 18, 2024

Usually original models use progressive springs. This type of custom automotive springs adopts a design with inconsistent thickness and density. The advantage is that when the pressure is not large, the part with a lower elastic coefficient can absorb the ups and downs of the road surface, ensuring a comfortable ride. After the pressure increases to a certain level, the thicker part of the spring plays a role in supporting the vehicle body. The disadvantage of this kind of spring is that the control feeling is not direct and the stability is poor.

linear spring

The thickness and density of the linear spring remain unchanged from top to bottom, and the elastic coefficient is a fixed value. This kind of designed spring can make the vehicle obtain a more stable and linear dynamic response, which helps the driver to better control the vehicle. It is mostly used in performance-oriented modified cars and competitive vehicles. The disadvantage is of course that the comfort is affected.

In addition, some racing cars and modified cars will add a thinner and softer small auxiliary spring to the harder linear spring. This combined spring can not only increase comfort, but also reduce the rebound force when the main spring rebounds under pressure. , to prevent the main spring from detaching from the spring seat.

short spring

The short springs are shorter and thicker than the original springs. Installing short springs can effectively lower the center of gravity of the vehicle body, reduce the roll generated during cornering, make cornering more stable and smooth, and improve the vehicle's cornering control. The damping setting of the original shock absorber is biased towards comfort, so the short spring and the original shock absorber are not very stable in cooperation. It cannot effectively suppress the rebound and compression of the short spring. When driving on bumpy roads, it will There is an uncomfortable jumping feeling. In the long run, the life of the shock absorber will be greatly shortened, and oil leakage may also occur. Of course, the above conditions are all relative. There will not be such serious damage in daily driving, and try not to drive vigorously. After all, the original shock absorbers cannot withstand high load pressure.

Replacing short springs is the most affordable modification solution to reduce the height of the car. It is a good choice for those riders with a small budget. Of course, short springs have limited improvement in handling performance and have many disadvantages, so be sure to be careful when purchasing. Make your purpose clear, otherwise the installation will not achieve the desired effect.

The selection method of shock absorber spring is as follows:

1. You can open the trunk by pressing the rear part with your hand. Press the trunk area with your hand, so that you can press harder without worrying about pressing the bumper and causing the bumper to fall off;

2. When you clearly feel that the car is deviating or drifting while driving, it is often due to the illusion caused by poor shock absorbers. If it is serious, it may be that the shock absorber is broken. The quality of any product will be good or bad, with advantages, disadvantages;

3. Judging the quality of rubber springs is mainly based on the following aspects: good quality rubber springs can be made into industrial products of various shapes and sizes. Their structures are very compact and can effectively use space. The elastic modulus is small, large elastic deformation can be obtained, and ideal nonlinear characteristics can be easily achieved. The shape is not limited, and the stiffness in three directions can be designed according to actual needs. It has high internal resistance and has a good effect on absorbing sudden impacts and high-frequency vibrations. Therefore, when a vibrator using a rubber spring starts and stops and passes through the resonance zone, its amplitude is much smaller than that of a coil spring vibrator, and the amplitude is relatively stable, but its energy consumption is greater than that of a metal spring, and it is easy to install and disassemble;

4. The main disadvantages of rubber springs are: high temperature resistance, low temperature resistance, oil resistance and light resistance, which are all worse than metal springs and easy to age. Stiffness is greatly affected by temperature. For near-vibration rubber spring vibrators, temperature changes can easily cause working point drift. Since rubber is not a pure elastomer but a viscoelastic material, its mechanical properties are relatively complex. Therefore, it is quite difficult to accurately calculate their elastic properties.
