How to Choose the Correct Lodax Outrigger Pad?

Assessing the Pressure

Check now

It is crucial to verify if the pressure exerted by the stabilizer foot on the pad can be sustained by the outrigger pad's material. LODAX material is capable of withstanding a pressure of 8N/mm² over an extended period and up to 25N/mm² for short durations (10N ≈ 1kg).

Example:
A stabilizer foot with a diameter of 200mm should not be subjected to a load exceeding 25T (100x100mm x π x 8N/mm² = 251,328N ≈ 25,000kg).

Outrigger Pad Sizing Guide

*Disclaimer
The following information offers guidance on the proper usage of outrigger pads for setting up cranes or other devices with outriggers or stabilizers. For more detailed information, refer to OSHA's standard on cranes and derricks in construction (1926 Subpart CC). It is an employer’s/user’s responsibility to establish policies and practices ensuring workplace safety, including thorough diligence in setting up cranes and aerial equipment as per the equipment manufacturers’ and state and federal requirements.

What Size Outrigger Pads Do I Need?

Choosing the appropriate outrigger pad size for your aerial device is essential to operate your equipment safely. Below are some general rules of thumb and OSHA recommendations to help you determine the suitable outrigger pad for your lifting needs.

General Calculations to Determine the Correct Outrigger Pad (Blocking) Size:

  • Rule of 5: Divide the unit's maximum lifting capacity in tons by 5. For instance, a 50-ton unit = 10 sq. ft. of cribbing or blocking.
  • Rule of 3: Multiply the crane’s float area in square feet by 3. For example, a 2x2 foot float = 4 sq. ft. Multiply 4 sq. ft. by 3 to get 12 sq. ft. of cribbing or blocking.

Examples of Soil Types and Load Bearing Capacities:

SOIL TYPE LOAD BEARING CAPACITY
Virgin Ground 22 psi
Asphalt 29 psi
Compressed Crushed Stone 36 psi
Clay/Silt Soil, Firm 43 psi
Mixed Granular Soil 51 psi
Firm Compacted Gravel 58 psi
Firm Compacted Gravel (more compacted) 72 psi
Firm Compacted Gravel (more compacted) 109 psi
Brittle Weathered Rock 145 psi
Concrete 1000 psi

*Check the load chart or consult the unit manufacturer for the maximum outrigger down pressure for a single outrigger.

Outrigger Pad/Float Size in Square Inches:

ROUND SQUARE
24 inch diameter 576 square inches
452 square inches
36 inch diameter 1296 square inches
1017 square inches
48 inch diameter 2304 square inches
1808 square inches

Specific Calculations to Determine the Correct Outrigger Pad Size:

Maximum outrigger down pressure divided by the outrigger pad/float square inches equals the amount of pressure per square inch on the blocking material.

Example:

62,800 divided by 1296 (sq. outrigger pad of 36x36) results in 48.5 lbs psi.

Now consult the soil type chart above. With 48.5 lbs psi, the unit can safely be set up on "Mixed Granular Soil" or any soil with a higher load bearing pressure than 48.5 lbs psi.
