Importance of Extrusion Blow Moulding Machine in Modern Packaging

Nowadays, plastic serves as a reliable and highly effective form of packaging for various industries, including the pharmaceutical sector. In this sector, two types of polymers are predominantly used: thermoplastics and thermosets.

The main difference between these two materials is that thermoplastics can be reheated and remolded, while thermosets cannot.

Thermosets are typically used for products that require high structural integrity and heat resistance, such as seals. They are also suitable as protective layers for other packaging materials, such as closures or lids for glass and plastic packaging, pharmaceutical casings, and more.

Commonly used thermoset plastics include melamine-formaldehyde, epoxy resins, and phenol-formaldehyde.

Thermoplastics find applications in a wide range of products and can be manufactured with high precision in large quantities, making them suitable for producing plastic containers.

Well-known thermoplastics are PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, and polyolefin.

Blow Molding

Another trend evident in Chicago is the significant proliferation of PET stretch-blow machines and vendors. The latest reheat models offer broader wide-mouth capabilities, faster production rates, and shorter changeover times. Some models feature innovations like preferential heating or heat-setting capability. Additionally, new integrated or single-stage PET machines can now make bottles from 100% regrind material or switch quickly between round and flat bottle styles.

In extrusion blow molding, new rotary continuous machinery entries are making waves, including the first such unit from a PET machine manufacturer. Two brand-new dual-station machines with updated features are also being showcased.

Other introductions include advancements in 3D blow molding technologies, PET barrier coating technology, PET preform tooling, and new devices like self-teaching leak testers, bottle profile gauges, and bottle packaging systems.

Going All-Electric

The Fischer-W. Muller division of Krupp Plastics & Rubber Machinery (USA) Inc. has expanded its all-electric offerings to include the long-stroke FMB line, featuring a new FMB4-100 model with a four-parison extrusion head and a 100-mm center distance. Electric servomotors and ball screws govern mold movements, while separate servomotors handle clamping. New controllers offer neck-calibration and blow-pin technology developed by Tahara Machinery Ltd. in Japan.

Other firms like JSW Plastics Machinery and Magic North America are also providing materials on all-electric extrusion blow machines. Uniloy Milacron and American Plastics Technologies will display new all-electric models.

Roll-out the Reheat Units

Uniloy Milacron is unveiling its first two-stage PET machine, the all-electric VersaPet. This reheat machine boasts a 75-ton clamp and separate servomotor drives for the stretch-blow pin and clamp. A four-cavity model will produce half-gallon bottles at high speeds.

Another new name in PET reheat machines is Tetra Pak PET Packaging Systems North America. Their LX-series machines promise up to 20% higher output per cavity and faster tooling changeovers. Krupp Corpoplast is debuting a 16-cavity model capable of producing 33,000 bottles per hour, with a maximum output of 42,600 bottles per hour.

Sidel Inc. showcases the new ACTIS 20 amorphous-carbon plasma treater, which enhances PET bottle storage life. Mag-Plastic North America Inc. introduces the SSB-20HP, a two-cavity machine capable of producing up to 2.5-liter bottles. SIPA North America Inc. rolls out its SFR series of rotary blow molders, capable of producing up to 38,400 containers per hour.

American Plastics Technologies is also introducing new all-electric reheat units.

New Integrated PET Units

Uniloy Milacron's new Uniloy 750 NN stretch-blow machine can produce bottles of 3L or more. Krupp Kautex demonstrates quick-change capabilities with its Ecomax 10/2 single-cavity PET unit. Aoki Laboratory America Inc. is presenting a new machine capable of processing reground PET into bottles.

Developments in PET preform molding include the CPCM- preform crystallizer from Chum Power Machinery Corp. and R&D Tool & Engineering Group’s Short Gate Technology, which improves the quality of PET preforms.

Extrusion Offerings Expand

Bekum America Corp. is introducing its H-111S single-sided machine for molding 3L containers, as well as the BM-905D twin-station machine for bottles up to 10L. Magic North America is showcasing the SL 15-30/ND machine for 5-gallon polycarbonate water bottles.

Heins Plastic Container Machinery Ltd. is debuting its CM series for producing HPDE or PVC bottles, and Graham Machinery Group is demonstrating the Hesta-Graham HLD-620 long-stroke shuttle machine. Rocheleau Tool & Die Co. Inc. presents new reciprocating-screw machines for multi-cavity bottle production.

Garold Automation Inc. will showcase its Model G four-station wheel machine, and Akei Plastic-Machine Manufacturing Ltd. is introducing an extrusion blow molder with in-mold labeling capabilities.

Industrial Units Debut

Two firms are showcasing the latest developments in 3D blow molding technology. Meico S.r.L. presents its flashless 3D molding and sequential coextrusion system, while JSW Plastics Machinery introduces a new system for six-layer fuel tanks that enhances output rates by moving molds instead of the die head.

Davis-Standard Blow Molding Systems introduces its D-S Series accumulator-head with the DLC system, reducing color-change times and eliminating weld lines.

Krupp Kautex rolls out the CP120S accumulator-head machine for drums, and Wilmington Machinery Inc. introduces a high-volume reciprocating-screw machine for multi-layer industrial parts.

Injection-Blow on Show

FGH Systems Inc. introduces new top-and-bottom cutting capabilities on the Ossberger DSE 50 injection blow molder, ideal for CV-joint boots and other automotive components. Jomar will showcase its 175-ton injection-blow molder running a 20-cavity HDPE bottle production line.

Auxiliary Items

New cooling, deflashing, and QC testing devices will also be displayed. AGR International Inc. brings its HHTP hand-held thickness probe, while BMPS Inc. introduces new PET preform injection molds and spin trimmers.

Fanuc Robotics North America demonstrates a robotic system for deflashing blow-molded parts, and PTI /Packaging Technologies & Inspection unveils its Self-Teach Series P-125 bottle leak tester.

Proco Machinery Ltd. introduces several new bottle packaging systems, including Robopik and Propak. Bekum America's new BA-34.2 unit makes large technical parts with in-machine post-cooling and deflashing.
