Selecting the Right Fence Post for Your Farm

Be it the popular fiberglass post that lends strong support to woven wire and high tensile fences, or the tough O'Brien step-in post used for quick electric polybraid management, Powerflex offers the perfect solutions for maintaining an adaptable and easy-to-manage farming system.

Fence post choice matters greatly for grazers, and we recommend prioritizing quality and durability. Our solutions withstand the harshest conditions, surpassing alternatives that fail after just a few seasons.

Planning Your Paddock System

Planning a paddock system depends on your land size and the number of paddocks you want to set up. For large pastures, consider strip grazing with permanent or semi-permanent posts, and using temporary posts to horizontally split strips into smaller paddock rotations as needed.

Rotation frequency depends on the environment, animal count, and paddock sizes. Daily rotation is often recommended, which becomes manageable with a well-structured paddock plan. It's crucial to periodically let your pasture rest. For more detailed advice, call us at 417-741-1230.

Temporary Post Solutions

Temporary post solutions include step-in posts, pigtail posts, or our innovative PowerPost for reel management. Temporary options in your grazing operation can make your life significantly easier.

These posts are great for polybraid, which can easily be wrapped around a reel. Reels can hang from your fence or PowerPost. When moving the fence, wind up the polybraid, gather your step-ins or pigtails, and transport everything to your next location. Grazers often use a wagon or four-wheeler for easier portability based on their operation size. You can browse our store for options like step-in posts, pigtail posts, and fiberglass posts in various colors and sizes.

PowerPost Reel Stand & Multi-Function Post

The PowerPost Reel Stand is unparalleled. It is robust enough to handle any combination of elements and offers an easy-to-move support structure for your reels. Essential when your paddock system needs to change angles without relying on a permanent high-tensile perimeter fence, or for creating paddocks of various sizes.

The PowerPost Reel Stand can support up to three reels, double or single hook reels, short stretches, or up to 1/4 mile stretches. It comes with a built-in driver for both self-driving into the ground and reverse driving out. Using multiple PowerPosts allows for the creation of large, diverse grazing systems.

O'Brien's Treadaline Step-In Post

Our most popular step-in post, and one of the most robust options available to grazers. While typical step-ins are useful for frequent reel setup movements, their plastic hooks can easily break off, and the posts degrade under the sun, reducing their lifespan. O'Brien Step-Ins are built for maximum durability and UV resistance with a superior hook design. Our customers report they last much longer than other step-in posts they've tried.

These posts are not suitable for high-tensile wire, which needs a more permanent post solution for additional structural support and longevity.

  • High strength H-profile post
  • Four positions for 1.5" polytapes
  • Eight positions for PolyBraid
  • Premium grade UV-stabilized polymers
  • Long galvanized stake embedded above the foot peg for added strength

Power Tread-In Post

Similar to the O'Brien post, the Power Tread-In is a more affordable solution with comparable durability.

  • Proven performer with a history of durability.
  • UV-stabilized polymer.
  • Eight holders for poly wire and a holder for poly tape.
  • Each post is 42" tall.

Using Step-In Posts for Livestock Paddocks

Step-in posts are ideal for managing paddocks due to their ease of use. Lightweight and simple to insert or remove, step-in posts save you the hassle of using permanent posts for every grazing scenario. They work seamlessly with polybraid reels for a flexible system.

While constantly managing temporary posts can be cumbersome, some farmers opt for more permanent solutions like fiberglass posts for frequently used paddocks. Plan your paddock management thoroughly, considering inputs and outputs. Sometimes, areas initially thought suitable for step-ins might benefit more from fiberglass posts, depending on rotation frequency. Proper planning can save time and money in the long run.

Pigtail Posts

For managing cattle, horses, or livestock well-trained to polybraid, a pigtail system with a single line of polybraid might be superior to step-ins. They are durable, quick to move, and lightweight. If multiple lines and more hooks/holes are required on the post, then step-ins or fiberglass posts are advisable.

  • Overall height is 30"
  • 28" from the top of the foot plate to the bottom of the loop where the PolyBraid rests
  • Second wire can be added at 16" from the top of the foot plate
  • 1/4" thick post with a wide foot plate

Permanent Fiberglass Post Solutions

Permanent post solutions are vital for a perimeter fence, typically set up with high tensile single strand or woven wire. Given the tension in this wire and the need for long-term durability, temporary plastic or pigtail posts are not recommended for these parts of your system.

Grazers often prefer fiberglass or polymer for permanent setups, and our industry-proven UV resistant fiberglass posts serve as an excellent choice. When combined with your corner post setup, they offer a comprehensive long-term solution.

You can browse our store for multiple size and pre-drilled options.

11/16" SunGUARD Pointed & Drilled Fiberglass Post

Choose pre-drilled posts to save yourself the hassle of drilling. Ideal for 30-50 foot spacing, they make it easy to guide your wire through the holes. UV-resistant and robust, their coating prevents glass slivers, making them easy to manage. Available in a variety of sizes.

  • 25-year warranty on the coating that prevents glass slivers
  • Ideal for rotational grazing
  • Lightweight yet durable
  • Easy to handle and install
  • Posts flex upon impact and return upright without popping out of the ground
  • These posts are pre-drilled

1-1/4" Fiberglass Rod Post

Our most popular permanent post, known for its exceptional durability and longevity. UV-resistant, these posts do not rupture, shorting, or splintering. Ideal for intermediary posts that support the fence between corner posts. Bulk discount pricing is available. Due to the nature of fiberglass, post coloration may vary slightly.

Setting Up a Corner Post

A permanent high tensile system requires structurally sound corner post solutions for areas where the fence makes 90-degree turns. Grazers usually choose between horizontal brace systems or triangle brace (floating brace) systems, using large treated wood posts driven deeply into the ground for corner assemblies. Typically, a floating brace assembly is recommended for its structural soundness, cost efficiency, and ease of installation.

The complexity of different corner post assemblies is extensive and will be covered in a future blog post. Meanwhile, we invite you to watch our how-to guide on installing a floating brace assembly and contact us at 417-741-1230 for further guidance.
