Question about bolts
Question about bolts
I work for a company that manufactures thread rolling and heading equipment for all levels of the fastener industry. I would say that poor control over material, heat treatment, and machine setup are the primary contributors to failure of imported fasteners.
Bottom line is production of consumer quality, run of the mill fasteners is very competitive and has been for years. The cheaper companies like Lowes, Home Depot, and Fastenal can buy the fasteners, the more they can mark them up. Production of these low quality fasteners (including grade 5 and grade 8) is really low tech and doesn't require extreme care to meet ASTM and ANSI strength and dimensional requirements. There used to be a lot of fastener manufacturers in the Mid West around Rockford Illinois, then they moved to Canada in the 60's and 70's, then more recently to places like China, India and Brazil.
There are still a few manufacturers in the US:
Holo-Krome (SHCS's) made in Hartford Conn
Kerr Lakeside (SHCS's and Cap Screws) made in Euclid Ohio
Stanley (ring shank nails) made in Rhode Island
Western Nail? (ring shank nails) made somewhere in Mid West
Probably some others, but they haven't bought new equipment recently.
rons, I hate to see manufacturing leave the country too, but you can't blame everything on Bush. NAFTA was signed by Bill Clinton in when he was president. NAFTA also doesn't have anything to do with imports from China and India. Now that we owe them so much money we will never be able to cut their imports or put tarriffs on their goods.
