Tube Sealing: The Ultimate Guide

Toothpaste, ointment, glue, grease, creams, etc. commonly found in everyday life are packaged in tubes (here we are discussing tubes as just one type of packaging container, also called squeeze tube), and this guide will discuss all aspects of tube sealing, including types of tubes, types of tube seals, and principles of tube sealing.

DENICE Product Page

A tube, squeeze tube, or collapsible tube is a collapsible package which can be used for viscous liquids such as toothpaste, artist&#;s paint, adhesive, caulk, ointments. Basically, a tube is a cylindrical, hollow piece with a round or oval profile, made of plastic, paperboard, aluminum, or other metal. In general, on one end of the tube body there is a round orifice, which can be closed by different caps and closures. The orifice can be shaped in many different ways: plastic nozzles in various styles and lengths are most typical. The other end is sealed either by welding or by folding.[ From Wiki

Types Of Tubes

Tube is a common packaging container, according to the tube material is divided into: plastic tube, laminate tube and metal tube.

Plastic Tubes

Plastic tubes are usually made of polyethylene. Plastic tubes are used for cosmetics such as hand creams, and also some foodstuffs. The plastic tube retains its shape after each squeeze unlike laminate tubes such as toothpaste tubes. Plastic tubes can be highly decorated or have a special additive such as soft touch to make the tube more appealing during use or at the point of sale.

Aluminium & Metal Tubes

Aluminium tubes generally have the far end folded several times after the contents have been added. The tube is typically hermetically sealed and nearly germ-free due to the high temperatures during the production process. The filled content can be squeezed out by finger pressure. The main characteristic of aluminium tubes is the total separation of the contents from the surrounding atmosphere; therefore, such tubes are especially suitable for the packaging of highly perishable contents. Aluminium tubes are used for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, paint, and technical products.

Laminate Tubes

Laminate tubes combine the benefit of having aluminum tube properties with the look and feel of plastic. They efficiently protect contents thanks to many overlaid layers, one of which is the barrier layer. Both longitudinal edges of the laminate tube are welded together and constitute the body which is then sealed to the tube shoulder. Depending on the product and its content, barrier layers are made of aluminium or EVOH plastic. Laminate material virtually prevents the transfer of light, air, and moisture.

Tube Sealing Machine

Tube sealing machine (also called tube sealer or tube closing machine), as the name suggests, is a machine that seals the end of the squeeze tubes. VKPAK tube sealers handle products ranging from crazy glue to toothpaste that deliver a product to consumers in plastic or metal tubes. Metal tubes are sealed by folding and then crimping the end of...

Tube Sealing Types and Principles

Selecting a tube sealing/closing method is just as important as selecting the proper tube. Making the right selection for sealing a tube is not only important to seal strength but also the final look of the tube.

Choosing an ideal tube sealing/closing method can be complicated with all the different types of tubes available. The best option depends on the level of quality you need as well as the type of tube being sealed. Generally speaking, hot air tube sealing is the best option for extruded plastic tubes, laminate tubes, and in-mold label tubes. Aluminum tubes are always sealed with different styles of folds.

Hot Air Tube Sealing

With Hot Air sealing the inside seal area of the tube is heated by hot air and then is transferred to the closing station where the tube is pressed together and chilled. Hot air tube sealing is the fastest method of plastic tube sealing making it ideal for large production runs and works with all plastic and laminate tubes. The biggest drawback is the extra cost that comes with additional change parts required to fit each diameter of tube.

To seal a tube with hot air, a special nozzle is dropped down into the tube to heat and soften the inner walls. Some of the fastest automatic hot air sealing machines will utilize a cooling ring to prevent overheating the tube. After the walls are softened with hot air, the tube moves to the sealing jaw station where it is pressed together and stamped with a batch number or date.

High Frequency Tube Sealing

High frequency tube sealing uses an eddy current that is produced in the aluminum layer between two electrodes; similar to the way a microwave oven cooks food. It heats the plastic material between the two electrodes in the seal area. Once the temperature reaches the melting point pressure is applied to complete the sealing process.

High Frequency sealing is slower than Hot Air Sealing and does not give the visual appearance that is produced with Hot Air Sealing. High Frequency Sealing is used for aluminum laminate tubes only.

Ultrasonic Tube Sealing

Ultrasonic tube sealing is another budget-friendly option like high frequency sealing. Ultrasonic tube sealing is a method where plastic and laminate tubes are sealed by the high frequency vibration of an ultrasonic sealing horn. This vibration heats the plastic of the tube in the seal area causing the plastic to melt. The end of the tube is held closed under pressure between the sealing horn and matching anvil to cool and complete the tube seal.

Ultrasonic tube sealing requires less change parts and can seal through product contamination in the seal area but is slower than Hot Air or HF Sealing. Ultrasonic Sealing does not give the same high quality visual appearance that is produced with Hot Air Sealing.

Hot Jaw Tube Sealing

Hot jaw tube sealing is one of the cheapest and simplest ways to seal a plastic tube. With cheap and simple, you also get subpar results in terms of seal quality.

Hot Jaw tube sealing utilizes crimping jaws that apply heat and pressure to the outside of the tube. Heat is applied to the outside and continues through to the inner tube walls and then crimping jaws apply pressure to seal the tube. Hot Jaw sealing is less efficient than other types of sealing and requires more time to achieve the tube seal. Hot Jaw sealing also produces a less than professional tube seal appearance.

Aluminium & Metal Tubes Sealing/Folding Options

When sealing aluminum tubes, it is most efficient to fold or crimp the tube closed. There are various styles of fold that can be used depending on the desired seal strength and aesthetic. For example, a viscous product will create lots of pressure inside the tube when squeezed, so a stronger fold such as a saddle or triple fold should be used.

Metal tube sealing requires a series of crimping stations which flatten and fold the end of the metal tube. The tube is then pressed to complete the sealing of the tube. Metal tube closing is available in several styles; single fold, double fold, triple fold or saddle fold options. Metal tube folding styles provide different tube seal strength and can vary depending on customer preference and/or product viscosity. A variety of tube lengths are required to complete the desired tube folding process and must be considered before tubes are ordered from the tube supplier.

VKPAK offers a variety of squeeze tube closing options for sealing plastic, laminate and metal tubes. Plastic and laminate squeeze tube seals include curved seals, rounded corners, slot/hole punch for hanging tubes and custom seals for unique tube presentations. Seal patterns for plastic and laminate tubes are also offered in smooth, standard or custom textures. Metal tube closures are offered with single fold, double fold, saddle fold or triple fold with smooth or wave crimp options.
