You can find more information on our web, so please take a look.
We are remodeling an old machine shed for seed/chemical storage and the main door for the forklift will be in the sidewall of a lean-to (will also be a bigger end wall door as a secondary entrance) and I'm wondering how big of a door we need for a average sized forklift. As it is now we can put in a 7' tall overhead door easily but I'm thinking that might be a little short, I can do an 8' door too but it will require a fair amount of work to move the header up that high.

I'm thinking eight will still be low. It depends some on the forklift you use. If it is big enough to have pneumatic tires, it will probably be a little higher than one with solid tires. Even if you are very careful about watching the top of your mast when you go through the door, it only takes one time to really mess up your day. I think I would hang a two by four at the height of the door a few feet inside the door to warn the operator, kind of like what parking garages have at the entrance. Cliff, when we added our shop on we put in a 8'h x 10'w cannister rollup door to move things with the forktruck between the shop & the cold storage area. When the door iscompletey up there;s approx 7' 10" of clearance between the bottom rail of the door & the floor Our forktruck is an older Toyota 5,000# w/2 stage mast with pneumatic tires . To the top of the mast with the forks resting on the floor is 7'1". lancef53

We have a 3 stage lb lift and it would go through an 8' high door with no problem. The mast doesn't start going up until the forks are waste height or higher if I remember correct. I wouldn't want to do it to carry in 100 hard sides of corn but it will work on a small scale.
Depending on what we do for off building storage in our shop, I was wanting to use double 42" doors that are 8' tall to still be able to fit our fork lift through. That way when we wanted to access storage just to walk in to get something we wouldn't need a seperate walk through door using up more wall space and we woudln't have to roll up a garage door all the time.

I have loaded and unloaded thousands of semi van and reefer trailers driving in and out with a two stage forklift (# to # lift), and three stage roll clamp machines ( to #lift) without hitting the tops of the trailers. Occasional without the guarding cage above the forks. Garage doop openers work just as well on industrial trucks as they do on your minivan. Just pay attention and you will be fine. If you have a door limit, size your machine accordingly. There are oodles of mast options, i.e 168inch lifts in two stage which will get a pallet 12 feet up, or 230 inch lift in three stages which will get that pallet over 19 feet up there. If you are new to forklifts, I would highly recommend a training course as well. They are not difficult to operate, but safety is often expensive, and they handle differently from a telehandler or skid loader. Cliff SEIAPosted 3/8/ 14:04 (# - in reply to #)

Just inside the door the ceiling height will be about 9' and it goes up to 12' under the trusses in main part of the building. In the endwall there is a 12'w x 11' door for bigger stuff but I'd like to be able to run the forklift or skid steer in through the side door so if we have machinery parked in front of the big door it won't have to be moved to get in and out with the forklift. We have been using a 3pt forklift and with it when you want a pallet at the back of the shed everything has to be moved out of the way to get to it and being able to come in through the center of the side of the building with the forklift will make it easier to access the back of the shed.

If I were in your shoes, I'd try to get as much clearance as you can. It appears you have more work on your hands. For comparisons, most semi van trailers and containers are about 110 inches high.
Good luck and don't work too hard at makeing the 8ft door. shorty

If you can go 9'2" anything that will fit in a van trailer will fit through your door.
