How can I attach things to the inside of a shipping ...

May. 06, 2024

I'd like to hang a garden tool rack on the inside of the doors, and a fluorescent light fixture from the ceiling. Does anyone know how to accomplish that without causing leaks?

Here's what I've considered so far:

Simply screwing things into the metal walls does not seem feasible, as they are quite thin, and the screws would protrude on the outside.

Welding on the inside might work, but I lack both the tools and expertise in metalworking. However, I do have plenty of woodworking tools and experience in carpentry.

Another idea is to drill holes for bolts and run them through from the outside to attach 2x4s. The head would be on the outside, and the nut would go on the inside. But I'm unsure about maintaining watertightness, especially for the ceiling where I would want to mount a piece of wood to secure an electrical fixture. I want to avoid causing leaks in my "wind and water tight" box. Therefore, sealing around the bolt holes would be essential. Should I use caulk or roofing tar?

Complete Guide to Shipping Container Framing

If you've ever built a wooden structure, you’re likely familiar with frames that provide support and shape to traditional constructions. However, the robust steel body of a container typically offers sufficient support and does not require interior framing. Instead, shipping container frames are used for attaching drywall, spray foam insulation, or creating extra doors and windows.

The methods and applications for using frames in container walls differ from traditional framing. Below, we’ll walk you through how to attach frames to shipping containers, exploring various types and their purposes.

How Do You Frame a Shipping Container?

To frame your container, select an appropriate design and installation method. For instance, secure the base plate to the floor and ceiling with angle brackets. Here are the steps for adding frames to your shipping container yourself:

Step 1: Select an Appropriate Material

First, determine which material to use—wood, steel, or aluminum framing. We discuss the pros and cons of each material for internal framing in the following section.

Step 2: Finalize the Design and Layout

You'll likely need professional assistance for this step. You'll also need to design a layout that accommodates electrical fixtures, accessories, plumbing lines, and other outlets.

If you use frames for insulation, ensure that segments close all underlying air gaps. Building codes and standards will guide you on the size and width of frames you'll require.

Step 3: Assembling the Framing

Securing frames can be challenging. Attaching the frame directly to the shipping container wall with nails and screws may cause leaks and affect the container's wind and water-tight capabilities, leading to condensation and moisture build-up.

As a precaution, ensure at least a 1" gap between the frame and the walls. Position the frame accurately, then use pocket-hole joinery or toe-nailing to secure vertical beams to the horizontal base plate. Fix the horizontal ceiling beam to the vertical beams with hurricane ties, creating a single assembly ready for installation in your container home or office.
