Making T-Slots | Practical Machinist...

The challenge with t-slot milling is that one side will inevitably be "climb milling." The only solution is to feed very slowly and ensure your setup is very rigid. Some sizes of t-slot can be managed with stock cutters designed for the task. In other cases, such as miniature work, you must use a woodruff cutter, often requiring the neck to be ground to clear the top of the slot.

I prefer to cut the center slot to a few thousandths less than the final depth. This approach reduces the load on the t-slot cutter and provides more room for chips to escape. Additionally, the finished job looks better if there's no visible step at the bottom of the slot. I also use a shop vac to pull out the chips during the cutting of both the center slot and the t-slot.
