How to Choose Stab-Proof Vest?
Stab-Proof Vests vs Bulletproof Vests: Understanding the ...
Personal protection is a crucial consideration in high-risk environments, and two commonly used types of protective gear are stab-proof vests and bulletproof vests. While both serve to safeguard individuals, it is important to understand the differences between them. In this article, we will delve into the distinctions between stab-proof vests and bulletproof vests, including their design and construction, the types of threats they protect against, the materials used, levels of protection, comfort and mobility, usage and applications, and how to select the right vest for specific needs.

Understanding Stab-Proof Vests
Stab-proof vests, also known as stab-resistant vests, are designed to protect individuals against stabbing and puncture threats from knives, blades, or other sharp objects. They are constructed using specialized materials and layers that are engineered to absorb and disperse the energy of a stabbing force, reducing the risk of injury. Stab-proof vests are primarily designed to prevent penetration and minimize the potential damage caused by such attacks.
Understanding Bulletproof Vests
Bulletproof vests, also referred to as ballistic vests, are designed to provide protection against firearm projectiles such as bullets. They are engineered to resist the impact and penetration of bullets, dispersing the energy and reducing the risk of injury. Bulletproof vests are constructed using layers of high-performance materials that are capable of stopping or slowing down bullets, thereby protecting the wearer from potential harm.
Key Differences between Stab-Proof and Bulletproof Vests
Design and Construction: Stab-proof vests are designed to prioritize protection against stabbing and puncture threats, while bulletproof vests focus on withstanding the impact of ballistic projectiles. Stab-proof vests often incorporate layers of strong fabrics and laminates, whereas bulletproof vests utilize ballistic-resistant materials like Kevlar or Dyneema.
Protection Against Different Threats: Stab-proof vests are specifically engineered to resist stabs, slashes, and punctures from sharp objects, while bulletproof vests are designed to stop or reduce the penetration of bullets fired from firearms. Stab-proof vests may not provide the same level of protection against bullets as bulletproof vests, and vice versa.
Materials Used: Stab-proof vests commonly employ materials such as aramid fibers, laminates, or specially woven fabrics to withstand stabbing forces. Bulletproof vests utilize materials like Kevlar, Dyneema, or ceramic plates to absorb and disperse the energy of ballistic impacts.
Levels of Protection: Stab-proof vests and bulletproof vests are available in different levels of protection. Stab-proof vests are classified according to the level of resistance against specific types of sharp objects, while bulletproof vests are categorized based on their ability to stop bullets of different calibers and velocities.
Comfort and Mobility: Stab-proof vests are generally lighter and more flexible than bulletproof vests, allowing for greater mobility and ease of movement. Bulletproof vests tend to be heavier due to the materials required for ballistic protection. However, advancements in design and materials have improved the comfort and flexibility of both types of vests.
Usage and Applications
Stab-proof vests are commonly used by law enforcement officers, security personnel, corrections officers, and individuals at risk of knife attacks or in environments where stabbing threats are prevalent. Bulletproof vests are primarily utilized by military personnel, law enforcement officers, security forces, and individuals facing the risk of firearm-related violence.
Selecting the Right Vest for Specific Needs
When choosing between stab-proof vests and bulletproof vests, it is important to consider the specific threats one may encounter. If the primary concern is protection against sharp objects or stabbing attacks, a stab-proof vest is the appropriate choice. If there is a higher likelihood of encountering firearms, a bulletproof vest is the preferred option. It is crucial to select a vest that aligns with the specific risks faced and provides the necessary level of protection.

How to choose between bulletproof and stab resistant vests
7 Things You Should Know Before You Buy
1. No bulletproof vest is 100% stab-proof, regardless of the manufacturer
The vests you find in Elite Armor's webshop with EA-Tex implants are stab-proof to the extent that they will protect against knife stabs in 95% of cases. In fact, if you wear a vest from Elite Armor, you will be better protected than 41.4% of American police officers! You can read more about it here.
When we say that no vest is 100% stab-proof, its because you could potentially penetrate the vest if you have a "real" razor-sharp weapon that can pierce through the vest, as it is so thin that it can break the otherwise tight fabric.
In our test videos, you can see how our vests handle knife stabs from a Stanley knife, a combat knife, and a survival knife - see the video below.
2. This is how the projectiles are absorbed
The implants in a bulletproof vest are extremely strong, cross-woven fibers. The fibers stop projectiles in the same way that a tennis net stops a tennis ball. The network of fibers distorts the projectile, which reduces the projectile's speed and transfers the energy from the projectile into the implant. When you buy a bulletproof vest from Elite Armor, you can choose fibers made from EA-TEX or Twaron. Regardless of which fibers you choose, you will receive protection at the NIJ IIIA (3A) level.

3. All gunshots are (still) deadly
Even if you wear a bulletproof vest, you should never forget that gunshots can still kill. A bulletproof vest only protects your torso, so the rest of your body is still exposed. Additionally, a bulletproof vest does not protect against ALL weapons. A vest at protection level IIIA protects against .44 Magnum and .9 mm, but not against automatic rifles, for example.
4. Durability is limited
A bulletproof vest cannot protect you forever. Each time a bulletproof vest absorbs a projectile, the vest weakens. As a rule of thumb, you can expect that a bulletproof vest can absorb 5 projectiles before you should replace it.
Additionally, a bulletproof vest has a "shelf life." If you choose the fiber type EA-TEX, there is a durability guarantee of 5 years, and if you choose Twaron, there is a durability guarantee of 10 years. This means that you should replace your vest after 5 and 10 years, respectively.

5. Wash the cover for your bulletproof vest
You should have at least two covers for your bulletproof vest. If you have an extra cover, you can use the vest even when your original cover is in the wash.
A clean cover is important to ensure that the implant is not exposed to dirt, which can shorten the implant's lifespan. By keeping your cover clean, you also maintain the warranty for 5 or 10 years.
6. Take care of your bulletproof vest
A bulletproof vest should never be left in direct sunlight or under UV lighting, as the ballistic properties can degrade from UV radiation and heat. The implants should therefore never be bleached or cleaned with chemicals, as bleach and other chemicals break down the synthetic fibers.

7. NO bulletproof vest protects against AK47
We often get questions about the resistance of our vests to shots from an AK47. No vest can withstand projectiles from such a caliber without a special hard armor plate/trauma plate - you can buy a trauma plate here.
